Alfred Moisiu Moisiu meets Macedonian minority representatives

3 May, 2007

Albanian President Alfred Moisiu met with representatives of Macedonian and Greek minority to discuss modalities to improve conditions for ethnic minorities in Albania.

Edmond Temelko, the leader of the Macedonian Alliance for European Integration, and Ligorac Karamelo, the leader of Human Rights and Freedoms Movement, demanded more rights for ethnic minorities in the country, Makfax correspondent said.

The interlocutors also discussed modalities to ensure that ethnic minorities be equally represented in politics at central and local level, which underlines the need for adequate electoral system.

Moisiu's Cabinet said on Wednesday that the meeting was initiated by representatives of ethnic minorities, who praised president's work and his continued care for minorities.

President Moisiu told his interlocutors that the most important is to cherish coexistence, tolerance and understanding, in particular to safeguard the coexistence.

The constitution should be respected by all people in Albania, and electoral legislation should be in line with reforms that pave the way to the European Union, Moisiu said.
